I dreamt of my mother walking into the house, shaking her head and speaking with resignation of how an in-law never took care of anything given to him. As she went on, casually discussing taking the thing in question apart to use the pieces elsewhere, I assumed she was discussing a piece of hand-me-down furniture.

One sentence suddenly took me by surprise, and I asked for clarification: "And there's blood all over the table."

She explained that she was talking about the cats. For some reason in the dream we'd given our two cats to relatives to take care of for a time, one to a cousin and one to the in-law and this in-law never took care of anything...and now something had happened to the cat we'd sent to live with him.

Notes and explanatory details:
#1: The dream came early this morning, and I was actually woken from it by a phone call from the relative in question. He was calling to tell us to look out in the street, a cat had been hit and killed by a truck and might be ours (as there are a number of near-identical tabbies in the area). It was indeed our cat, the same one given (in the dream) to the in-law.

In strange parallel to the dream, my mother walked out of the house, shaking her head and speaking with resignation about the matter, about needing to dig a hole in the back yard to bury the poor thing and would I go get a towel or bag or something so she could pick her up.

Again, one sudden sentence took me by surprise: "Hm. There's almost no blood."

She then carried her to the porch and placed her on the chair beside the table referred to in the dream as covered in blood.

#2: The relative and the in-law share the same first name. Were I to play the Shrink, I'd say I was blaming the relative for being the one to tell us about the cat's death, and feeling guilty about blaming him for something not his fault, thus switching it to the in-law.

#3: In the minute between waking and hearing the news, I thought the dream somehow related to an incident that occurred when I was a child. We'd sent a couple of our older dogs to live out their last days in the country with relatives, but the couple's falling out led to his brutally butchering our pets and theirs for revenge, and leaving them on the side of the road for us to find.

There are of course similarities in the details to explain this. The name of that small town has been in the news; the dream mentioned pets that had been entrusted to a relative with the assumption that at this point they could better care for the animal, and which had afterwards come to harm; the person doing harm to the pets was an in-law.

We'd also recently taken in a dog temporarily for the relative we'd entrusted ours to so many years ago, only to have the animal come up missing a year after several of our dogs went missing from the yard (believed to be stolen).
