Grandmother's lunch
I'm out with my grandmother, who in the dream happens to be Indian (with a dot, not a feather). We go for lunch and then I ask her to come shopping with me. I ask only out of a sense of obligation, not expecting her to accept or to read much into it. She agrees to go, however, and makes a great deal out of it; feeling guilty about my motives, I decide to go forward with it and try to make an honest go of the event.

Avoiding cars on the narrow streets, we wind our way through the City, which is highly industrialized and yet pre-Renaissance at the same time. We finally arrive at a large factory-like mall, and she wants to go to the top floor for coffee. I drop a book on the tricky moving stairs leading up, and grabbing the book involves some acrobatics. I manage to slide through the stairs and make it to the floor proper, without falling or being diced (no small feat!), and there I am greeted by my accomplice. "Hello, Thief!" I want to warn him against accidentally outting me, because I can't carry through with the day's plans--I was to go shopping to scout out the location of our next crime.

My sisters show up at the mall, shocked that our grandmother is being nice and that I'm willingly spending time with her. I tell them to give her some of their time, that it means more than anything else they could give. One is interested and sits with us, while they other digs in a giant wall waste disposal unit for her purse and dumps pet bedding all over me in the process.

"Just like last time," I snark, in reference to an earlier mission (presumably in the dream, though unremembered), during which we emptied the unit in search of something I cannot now recall. I was somewhat snarktastic over the fact that my sister never carried her purse anywhere, but only ever left it behind as part of a plan, an excuse to be searching, and thus I had to wonder about her motives.

Notes and explanatory details
#1. The unremembered earlier segment of the dream involving the mission with the waste disposal unit also featured a barely-remembered tour of crowded and idiosyncratically technosuburban back alleys--the same alleys I travel with my grandmother later to reach the mall. In these earlier segments, I was in a car with someone.

#2. The City is highly industrialized but at the same time pre-Renaissance in feeling--very Terry Gilliam, if that makes any sense.

#3. The mall seems to be loosely drawn from St. Louis Center, the most craptatious urban shopping mall in existence.

#4. The evil, moving razorblade escalator was, I think, a security device in the earlier part of the dream and a nuisance in the latter; it amuses me in both.

#5. The grandmother in the dream was not my grandmother; the sisters not my real sisters. Thus the comment on our grandmother being judgmental or harsh has to point, I think, at something else.
