I dreamt that I was back at the pets tore where I used to work, but it was now part of a 24-hour Home Depot. I was trying to get the pet store portion of the building open and ready for business, but I kept getting dragged away to address hardware issues.
At one point, a monkey escaped, and after some effort, I had to give up and ask a manager to catch it. A customer bought it from them, and I felt as if I'd failed some sort of test.
The fish section of the pet store was now a giant pond, and I realized that I'd forgotten to do any of the opening tasks, like feeding the fish, for several days. I grabbed one of the co-workers and asked them what had happened to the task sheet that laid out opening/closing jobs and other duties, and they told me the store had stopped using the sheets because it was too easy for people to sign off on tasks without actually having done them.
Notes and explanatory details
#1. My last goldfish, a little feeder rescue from the old pet store, was on the brink of death last night. I think he was the spark for this dream.
#2. A former co-worker from the pet store now works for Lowe's and suggested I apply for a job there; another friend works at their competitor, Home Depot, and mentioned applying there.
#3. I'm not sure what's up with the monkey. Sorry.
#4. What I miss most about the pet store job these days is having a list of the day's tasks in front of me. My current job doesn't have task lists at all; several co-workers have complained that management criticized them for not getting certain tasks done when they had never even been told that they were supposed to be doing those tasks. I make up my own lists, to stay focused and efficient.
I hadn't cleaned the goldfish's tank recently, since we'd planned to move it back outside into a planted tub soon, and I think this is the root of the "missed tasks" dream fretting.
