Dream stub: Zombie traps
May. 20th, 2005 11:11 amI dream of zombies fairly often, but this dream was different than the usual fare. My zombies aren't usually very intimidating; they stumble around like a herd of sedated sheep, and I push my way through them. Here, however, they were in full cannibalistic glory and they had the miscellaneous townsfolk (myself included) trapped in buildings. When my companions and I stumbled out of our shelter to make a break for a safer building, we found a burning pile of meat, possibly a former person. We realized that this had been the source of the horrible smell we'd detected, as the wind was blowing it right at us. We also realized that it would soon attract more zombies to our location.
Was it an accident, we wondered, someone burned where they'd fallen? Had someone been trying to lure the zombies into a trap? Or, our worst fear: had someone been trying to lure the zombies to our position?
If I interpret zombies as problems made manifest, then in my usual zombie-filled dreams they are less a specific threat than a general air of discomfort and anxiety. In this dream, though, not only were they a very specific and heinous threat, they were being drawn to me by a malicious outside force. While it has felt lately as if Life has bent me over and made me its bitch without offer of reacharound or lube, I didn't realize that I'd been thinking of things in terms of conscious intent--that is, of things being done to me by the Universe to send me a message, as opposed to things that were simply happening for a variety of reasons (because things happen, because of my own inattention to details, etc.).
This was actually a very extensive dream, but I didn't get the chance to write it down before work and only this intriguing and suggestive detail stuck with me.
